Lighting on the grounds of Maarschalkerweerd Noord - Utrecht (Video)

Nestled in the greenery of Utrecht-Oost lies Maarschalkerweerd Noord, a unique place where sports, hospitality, urban agriculture, and nature come together. It is a space where people meet, exercise, work, and relax. For such a versatile environment, sustainable lighting in Utrecht is a key solution for combining safety, comfort, and respect for nature. The site’s various functions call for lighting that is practical but also complements the natural and sustainable character of the surroundings.

Given this diversity, the question arose: How do you provide lighting in such a multifaceted area without cables, without excavation, and without disrupting nature? For Maarschalkerweerd Noord, the search was on for sustainable lighting in Utrecht that would complement the unique combination of sports, nature, and community functions.

SolarWoodle was given the opportunity to install sustainable lighting at this location—completely off-grid and circular. The reason was straightforward: in certain areas, it was simply too dark. Especially in the evening, when sports practices end and people are moving around the grounds, good visibility and personal safety were essential. At the same time, the natural character of the environment—including the ecologically sensitive zones (flora and fauna) at the Koningshof community garden association and the nonprofit organization De Moestuin Utrecht —had to remain undisturbed.

By using solar energy and local, wooden fixtures, we were able to place lights without any ground work, cables or external power supply. They are now spread throughout the site: along paths, near parking lots, between the sports fields of SV Kampong, on the terrace of restaurant Stadsjochies and at the catering facility of De Moestuin.

The lighting is tailored to every use: functional where necessary, atmospheric where desired, and subtle where tranquility is important. The installation was made possible in part with support from the Utrecht Entrepreneurs Fund. This sustainable lighting project in Utrecht demonstrates how smart solar solutions can contribute to a safe and nature-inclusive environment.

This project not only fulfilled a practical wish, but also made something bigger visible: that it is indeed possible to illuminate an area like this - with sports, care, catering, nature and community function - in a sustainable and friendly way. On solar energy. Without concessions to comfort or ecology.

As Ger says in the video:
"You use the heat from the sun to turn that into lighting at night. And that's actually pretty basic."
